Do you mean the microphone buttons?

Maybe it's a mic problem, open it and check all the wires for continuity...

I dont have the FT8900, but I think both the transceiver and the mic have a lock function. You indicated that you have performed a reset, but you might want to check those features. Everyone probably knows this, but you can search for a keyword in a .pdf. Ctrl+F opens a search box.

The microphone lock feature (Upper right side of the microphone) locks all the buttons, except the PTT, on the mic only. Locking the radio requires selecting Menu item 21 and setting it to ON (Page 24 of the manual.) It will not lock the PTT. That's a separate function (Menu item 22.) See page 63 in the manual for further explanation of the lock functions.

also, just because it's a Yaesu mic into a Yaesu radio, with the right connector on it, doesn't mean it's wired right - I still reckon' you have a loose wire...

Post a picture of what you are talking about? Center Button where? Center Button in the middle of the display is the function button.
Button to its left is the scan, button to the far right is also scan.. Radio squelch needs to be closed for the radio to scan.
The radio will function without the microphone. Unplug the microphone, close the squelch, press the scan button. Find yourself an Elmer!

    Default FT 8900

I have one and havenít had that problem. My radio will transmit the carrier, but no audio. Antenna swapped and same thing happens. Anyone have any ideas? Was using cross and repeat to extend HTís range during event in support of schools during COVID-19 lockdown. Called Yaesu and they said they had no idea-have to send it in.....
