    I have a Lake 80m QRP CW transceiver.

    I have a plain simple key.
    the question is does the key need a tone generator.

    No, your key does not need a tone generator. Your key is a simple switch. When you close the switch, the transceiver generates a unmodulated carrier. That is all you need to generate for CW operation. It is common, however, for the transceiver to have a built in side tone, so you can hear your CW. But the key is just a key.

    On receive, a unmodulated carrier from another station is mixed with a signal internal to the transceiver. The mixing process produces the tone that you hear.
