Default Vanity Call Signed Denied, not sure why.

    Hello,

Trying to get KN6EMC or KW6EMC and it was denied. It doesn't really tell me why. Any insight? I am in California.

    Yes.

I was able to look up your application on http://ae7q.com/. I shows that you applied for two possible vanity call signs. But there are two problems with your application.

One problem is that, you did not check to see if the call sign "KN6EMC" was available. That call sign is already allocated and won't be available until 2027. You can check call sign availability on http://www.radioqth.net/ or http://ae7q.com/.

The other problem is a typo. You were looking for "KW6EMC". But your application says "K86EMC". That is not a valid call sign. A quick search shows that "KC6EMC", "KD6EMC", "KE6EMC", "KF6EMC", "KG6EMC", "KI6EMC", and "KM6EMC" are available. Note that, even if you entered it correctly as "KW6EMC", that call sign is not available.

It looks like you obtained your license very recently. You might want to hold off on the vanity call sign until you upgrade to General or Extra. That would possibly give you a wider choice of available call signs.

Also note that, even though you are in "Zone 6", you can use any zone number you wish (1-9). Some don't like to do that because it gives a false impression of a different zone. But it is perfectly legal. California is a particularly bad zone for requesting a new call sign. There are just too many hams in California and most of the good ones were taken a long time ago.

KW6EMC is available. There is no record showing in the ULS. The ULS is always the definitive answer when it comes to valid or available call signs.

It's interesting that "radioqth.net" will show some call signs with the KW prefix, but not all. Anyway, it looks like he has resubmitted his application and will probably get KW6EMC.
