Thread: Secondary RADAR antennas

    Default Secondary RADAR antennas

Does a directional antenna receive power from a transmitting omnidirectional antenna if the transmitting antenna sits outside the directional antennas beam pattern? A secondary radar has a beamwidth of roughly 2.4 degrees. An aircraft responds omnidirectionally. If the aircraft was say 1.6 degrees off boresight (.4 degrees outside of the beam pattern) and transmitted, would the radar antenna recive the transmission?

Yes, but very heavily attenuated, at least by 3 dB.
