if your limited in space a spiral mag loop antenna would work well.
but a pixie radio is extremely low power! 1/2 a watt on full power.
chances are you may not make a contact with it but it depends...
baofeng radios are considered junk by many Hams but not all of them. they tend to be noisy signal wise, but that does not excuse their behavior.
its been a game to many now to purchase the cheap...
please read the instruction manual or go to the website for the information.
as far as the longest transmitting units , it depends on the wattage, antenna height and what land features may obstruct...
length of your antenna must be a resonant length unless you are using a tuner
with the uv5r too big an antenna will overload it
a 2 meter 1/4 wave antenna is roughly 19 inches long 1/2 wave about...
the industrial grade outlets have the "holes" in the back but have screw clamps in them instead of the spring contacts The cost a little bit more but are far more reliable.

I havent been able to get my ticket yet due to covid restrictions. but that does not stop me from learning or building.
dont discount technician license and even though its not required for the license learn morse code for cw communications, purchase some qrp radio kits and build them. they are a valuable tool for...
run a bonding strap to the ground conductor to bleed off induced voltage and current.
a metal desk can induce voltage by acting as an antenna with a fluctuating magnetic field present in most house...
you can program the radios to monitor the frequencies
but even with a license you cannot use a ham radio to transmit on those frequencies
doing so can get your license revoked!
we used a small jackhammer works very quickly! ground rods or rebar either one
(funny story on that)
at my last job they had a couple big fellows hammering rebar into the ground and they were...
living out there in mass. i would most likely change the coax and or the antenna both.
I suspect with a high probability that its water inclusion and possibly salt corrosion due to close proximity...
dont be afraid to experiment with old junk parts to see what they do.
learning electronics is fun and rewarding when you build something and it works.
If it doesnt then you troubleshoot step by...

It takes two of these shims to keep the shaft centered.
its difficult to see but the end of the tube has two small holes drilled...
i cant find a picture on the web but as best describes them
one tube slides inside another a bit loose,
then thin sheets of copper or brass are formed to fit between the inner wall of the lower...
usually there is couple of small copper shims inserted in holes at the bottom of each section that are stopped by the rolled in top edge.
if one of these comes apart then the shims have broken off....
that looks so cool !
quality aside often the ambient temperature can affect the manufacturing process (IE. hotter expands and cooler contracts)
an item made in a warm climate will often shrink slightly in a cold climate...

i know what you mean!
usually i store equipment for a short time before stripping them out. (but then kick myself in the butt a few weeks after scrapping the chassis)!
worst part is trying to find...
usually swaged on (a form of compression without deformation)
depending on the material the corona ball can be drilled out and soldered in place.
even with extreme power output you are not going to...
Im currently researching and possibly designing a module that can be plugged into the earphone jack of a cw radio with filtering to pick up the strongest signals and convert the code pulses to light...
we all do it to some extent! especially those of us who homebrew.
salvaging parts from old electronics.
example:
as a recycle pro i come into contact with many types of electronics.

the problem is primarily because what is legal in one country may not be in another!
with manufacturing in china or other countries their equipment is built to their legal standards and sold at much...
