    Auto-ATU's usually need a transceiver to work. Go for a simple manual type tuner - you won't need anything elaborate for a receiver. An ATU (at its simplest) is simply a variable capacitor and a tapped inductor. Search for L-match or Π-match and build one for around $10!

    I just installed 160-6 meter 117 ft wire fed antenna with a 9:1 Transformer the qso king from mapleleaf and to be honest it really works great for my alinco dxr8t I need to have it set on 20 + decibel to hear however I do need an antenna tuner and I was wondering between the mfj 956 the mfj 959 C and the mfj 1046 which would be best for receive only the mfj 939 is an automatic antenna tuner that might be a route to go to and it saves memory Has anyone used any of these on long wire fed antennas and could recommend which one they think is best thanks so much

    How do you know the watt meter is calibrated correctly? Is this an external meter or one built in? I ask because it seems that one antenna terminal is connected to the internal tuner & one isn't if I'm reading the manual correctly. Next thing that comes to mind is are you generating a single, solid tone or a series of dahs/dits? That might explain the discrepancy. Is the power turned down in a menu somewhere? 80 watts is too close to rated maximum for me to suspect bad finals.     My ICOM IC-735 has been working OK for several years, but I have hardly used it as I didn't have a decent power supply. Last week, I finally got one. I hooked up the radio and... nothing! A symptom of the fault seemed to that on power on, there is burst of regular noise from the speaker, but then it fades to nothing and the needle of the S-meter moves fully to the right. I pressed just about every button, clicked every switch and twiddled every knob, but to no avail. A couple of net searches later, I thought I had found there answer. An thread from some other forum indicated that the problem could IC8 (CD4021) in the PLL circuit had died. So, I replaced it. The problem is still there. While poking around a bit more, I slid the "RF GAIN" slider all the way and the needle returned to the left and the regular radio noise came back. Moving it up and down, the receiver goes dead and the needle moves.

    There's nothing new about vertical dipoles. Just few suggestions: The higher from the ground the better. Run the coax away from the feed point at 90 from the vertical for as long as practically possible or if you're using tubing, run the coax /through/ the lower element. Virtually every book about aerials for amateur radio will cover using dipoles vertically polarised.

    I would say neither, until you know what you what from "upgrading". I mean, what can they do, that you need, that the Baofeng UV-5R cannot? If you need more range, then build a direction aerial. Seriously, a few watts and a good beam aerial go a looooong way! If you find just using FM is restrictive, but want to stick with 2 metres and 70 cm, then look for a radio with SSB. But to get the most from that, you will need a direction aerial too. If you want to use a digital mode, such as DSTAR for example, then you need to decide which mode you want (i.e., which is used most in your area) and ind a radio that supports that.

    Okay, So I'm nearing a year with my Baofeng UV-5R V2+. I'm interested in upgrading to a new handheld pretty soon. I'm looking at the Retevis RT82 or the Yaesu FT-70DR. What do you guys recommend?

    Does anyone know the number for the finals in a TS-480SAT and where I can get them? My rig only gets 80 watts out on CW with a watt meter and a dummy load connected and the rig tuned. I thought there was a way to bypass the tuner to test the finals, but I can not find one. Please help. 73's Dave

    May I suggest you will have better luck if you add at least two (or three) more 1/4 wave counterpoise elements evenly spaced around center, horizontally at the base. Not that what you propose won't work, it's just that you will get a more omni directional pattern from your RF output. This is commonly known as a 1/4 wave ground plane vertical, which is what you are proposing here. You shouldn't need any sort of UNUN/BALUN for this to be efficient, however the impedance will be slightly less than 50Ω, probably around 35Ω or so. You can bring the impedance back to around 50Ω by tilting the ground plane elements downward between 30 and 45. At least that's been my experience with the 40 meter 1/4 wave ground plane I put up here in CN86jc using 12ga wire and a big bamboo sprig.     I ordered up some FT114-61 ferrites from Amidon planning to make a 10m 9:1 unun. However, when I excitedly wound it and soldered on a 450ohm resistor to do a sweep with my rigexpert, I was very disappointed in the SWR curve. What I did: 2 stacked FT114-61 ferrites with 11 turns (trifilar) of 18AWG solid-core insulated wire. The SWR is at 2:1 at 28MHz, I expected better. What I assume (from reading online, I'm not this smart): is that the more turns I use, the lower the self resonance and thus the lower the common-mode impedance at higher frequencies. I assume the higher I go in frequency, the more it acts like a choke. What I would like to know: 1st, is what I assume correct? And 2nd, does anyone know the optimum number of turns for 10m given 2 stacked FT114-61 cores?

    I had an idea to use my 10 meter dipole as an upright. If I put one leg up a tree, and the other out to the side as a ground plane, from my understanding I will have made a quarter wave upright. I am asking as much as stating. If anyone has done this please share your experience. Also making this adjustment, i should remain at 50 ohm resistance and have no need for an unun/unbal. any input on these thoughts are appreciated. KD9KVS I have a brain injury.     I just got my ham license last year, and my first rig was a TH-F6a. I chose that radio because of its size and design, which I really liked. The problem is that all activity in my area is digital, and the F6 is analog. So after a year with a ham license, I still haven't contacted anyone. So I tried to get a digital rig, and my favorite was an FT1XD. I really don't like touch screens, so I didn't want an FT2. I'm more of a purist, and the FT1 is just my style. I wanted a new one, and I knew that the radio was discontinued and no longer available, so I thought I really lucked out when I saw that new ones were available from Japan. Not knowing about the band plan difference, I bought one. What a surprise when I found out the 'Error' I was getting on my club repeater's freq was because it was above 146. I learned about the mod for this rig, where you remove solder from the board in the hole in the back of the radio, so that's been done, and a reset has been done multiple times, but nothing has changed...

    Speaking of price gouging, I looked up the zastone zt-v8 I was gifted, they were 2 for <20usd now to find one at that price seems like a good deal. If I am remembering correctly, that was this past December they were at that price. Maybe I just happened upon a great deal. Just a thought.

    All good points. I do like the features on my yaesu, but hardly agree that a bit more programming capability is worth an extra 300 bucks. Thing about software... once you have it, copy/paste is free (just not for the end consumer). I surely didn't intend to call anyone who purchases an expensive radio a "gullible American", but it cannot be denied that everything in our economy is overpriced. If a given person thinks the price is fair, then for that person, that's all that matters. Value is a matter of perspective, its an opinion, but 10% of people being happy paying well above cost shouldn't be motivation for price gouging.

I imagine some of the older crystal radios, and even early Yaesu radios, had very similar problems. While it is set for different bands and tuning hf is wildly different than vhf (base to ht difference) the principal still stands. That is my two cents for the day. God Bless and good day.

    I use both Baofeng and ICOM HTs and I think some of the cost difference are being overlooked. Yes the Chinese radios are cheaper and for tx/rx they may be equal in performance. They lack in features though. One big example in my use case is bank scanning. When I travel I program repeaters for locations I will be at and save them into different banks on the Icom. I can use each back to scan only the bank for that area and ignore other areas or my home bank. For the Baofeng I can only scan all memories. I need to either remove my home memories or increase the saved memories and scan multiple memories I know will not have anything in that location. This gets even harder when you have two repeaters in different areas using different tones. If you try to pick one you have to remember which memory is which tone. If you use frequency vs name.
