Thread: Yaesu FT-857D band selection double stopping

Default Yaesu FT-857D band selection double stopping

Has anybody with a Yaesu FT857D (or similar) radio come across the situation where the band change button stops twice within a single band when flicking up/down through the bands?

Mine recently started doing this, although only on VFO A , VFO B behaves correctly and as VFO A used to.

In my case, it'll always stop twice on 15m – if I'm flicking up from 17m it'll stop at say 21.4 MHz, then pressing the 'band up' button again changes frequency to just over 21.5MHz (above the end of UK 15m allocation). Pressing it again makes it move up to 12m. The same happens on the way back down.

Strangely, if after changing to 15m I manually tune up to above 21.5MHz, then press band up, it'll change to 12m immediately (no extra stop within 15m).

Everything works fine other than this, so no big deal – just wondering if anybody else has seen the same behaviour. I expect a radio reset would sort things out, just interested to see if there's another fix.

I don't know the radio but have a look in the manual under Band Stacking Register. Or try Paul M0TZO on here.

Ah, that's the Extra band feature in the band buttons.

Not sure how to stop it but know it exists.

IE you will have one for each band but radio will also recall an extra stop. Not sure how it/why happens though.

Thanks M0TZO/MU0CHN for the pointers – quick search on 'extra band' highlighted the additional band feature, which if you tune to a frequency outside the amateur allocations it remembers & treats it like any other band.

Once it's there you can't remove it, but you can move it around (like off the bottom of the bands) - I changed to 160m and tuned to < 1.81MHz, and now it's moved the 'extra band' down there, not in between 15m & 12m.

I can see the advantages of this now, albeit a little subtle!
