Yes, that wouldn't hurt, any insulation will be OK - you can slice the end off the plastic sleeve on the RCA plug, then it accepts RG8.
A better idea would be to take that RCA off the chassis and put an SO239 on.
Newby here, Is there a special rca connector to attach to rg8u coax for a SB 104? Seems like a large dia. coax for a small rca connector. The plastic or rubber portion of an rca connector that shields the soldered area isn't going to slide up on an rg8. Do you leave that part off and use some shrink tubing or what? Thanks in advance! I think the way to go is to put in the SO239. Makes the most sense to me especially if I want to use that antenna for any other radio. Thanks Good call!
I'd bet 75% or more of the Heathkits that originally had RCA jacks for the antenna now have SO-239s, probably installed at the time of construction. I know I changed all of mine. My DX-100B (early 1960s vintage) came with a good ol' SO-239 from the factory.
