Thread: Source for crystals?

  1. #1

    Default Source for crystals?

I want do to some experimenting with crystal oscillators - is there a good source online for crystals? I'm looking for a wide variety of fundamental frequencies: 1kHz, 1 MHz, around 7 Mhz, 14 Mhz, etc.

    Any leads?

    Hi Druid
There is a UK company at www.quartslab.com

Hmmm.... well, strangely enough quartzlab doesn't have 7.000 MHz crystals (or in fact any in the 40M band). And of course I've done a Google search, but the results may not be places to BUY crystals, or are links to other links or lists, or links to eBay, or sites describing "crystallography"...

I was hoping for an actual recommendation: where do YOU get your crystals from?

Crystals which work at amateur fundamentals are not common. You may find one or two "in band" from common electronics but no more than that.
I have a tray of scavenged crystals, mostly junk because they are either out of band to begin with or not multiplyable (is that even a word?)

I wrote a small BASIC program which you could type in the marked frequency and it showed the harmonics, never got round to making it sing & dance when one was found within the Amateur bands, but it was useful to go through all those duff crystals I have...

    10 REM Crystal harmonics
    20 INPUT "Frequency ";f
    30 PRINT
    40 FOR n=1 TO 20 STEP 2: LET h=f*n: PRINT h: NEXT n

I've bought HC-49/u size amateur band crystals either via eBay or the G-QRP club sales. They tend to be for the low CW end of the bands. Another good source for larger old style crystals is http://www.af4k.com/crystals.htm, but more expensive.

Quartslab would always cut custom crystals to order, I bought quite a few from them back in the day. Don't they do that any more?

The answer to "Who do you buy your crystals from?" is "Quartslab".

International Crystals can make just about any crystal package/frequency/characteristic you specify. Might be spendy, but ...
