Default Trio TR 751e on 2 meter SSB

i recently bought the aforementioned radio. i use a 2 meter dipole with (admittedly) cheap coax. it works a treat on FM and it does transmit on SSB and makes encouraging noises on RX but i do not hear any voices. the VSWR is 1:3.1 on low power. any ideas?

    Thanks

Silly question... 2m SSB is dead quiet most of the time except during contests and good conditions. Are you sure there's anything there to listen to? If you open the squelch (and the squelch should always be open on SSB) do you hear noise?

Is your antenna horizontally polarised? The norm is vertical for FM and horizontal for SSB.

last night I heard a local net so i now know that the RX is fine. at the weekend I was told an operator in England was in QSO with some Russian stations.
