    Default Ham Radio Headpones

Hello from K2CLH! I am nine years old and wondering what are some good headphones to use for HF? I also need them to have a monoplug connector on them so that they will be compatable with my radio! I am thinking $100 or less. Any comments or feedback would be great!

    73 and good DX!

I use an old pair of Kenwood HS5 phones... they come with 1/4inch mono jack, as they are designed for communication use, rather than stereo/hi-fi.

I normally just use what ever pair of sennheiser's I have close to hand but generally always use the Heil Headset!

Are there any new models you would recommend? Thanks for the feedback!

Buy a pair of surplus helicopter headphones for a pound at a rally, put some new cables on and you have a very nicely noise insulated set of headphones with a microphone (which you can also change if you want).

Sennheiser make very good headphones, HiFi or DJ style are usually pretty good, but the cables tend to break too easily.

Thanks a lot for all the feedback I am looking at this for a item to put on my Christmas list, so I'm looking for more of a model and brand I can say " get a Senhieser 123A" or what ever. To give you more detail, I want my ears totally inclosed in the foam they have around the edges, not the type that just sit on your ears.

As suggested earlier, think about staying away from headphones that are designed for music listening. Your communications radios don't have that kind of frequency response. Look for something with a response from 300 to 3000 Hz. Wider audio response on a crowded band isn't pleasant.

As far as exactly how they fit over your ears -- I had an old Navy flight helmet with a pair of excellent headphones - like the ones Dem was referring to. I carefully removed them and got a real cheap pair of stereo 'phones back in the 1960s. Removed the 'phones from each earcup, and put the good ones in the junky headset. Worked - and still works - perfectly. You may have to do some customizing, but you may have to butcher up some good stereo 'phones to get the fit you want. Your call.

I have been doing some research on the side and found the Sennheiser HD-280PRO's. Take a look and let me know! Thanks for the feedback! 73!

Freq response: 8 Hz to 25KHz. Not what I'd use for communications. Fine for stereo, but IMO a poor choice for hamming.

I use a set of PC350's on the IC-910 for SSB/FM work and find them good also used them for HF operating.

As a point of info, there are sterio to mono conversion plugs so you can use any headset you like.
