    Default Soo, call sign questions.

So, when I test for General (and say I pass), do I get a new call sign assigned? I was looking at getting a vanity call sign, so I could have a call sign I want (have a few in mind) and that I could keep using as I test up.

As I understand it, in the USA, when you move from one tier to the next you do not get assigned a new callsign unless you request it.

If you want to go for a vanity callsign you can check to see if the one you want is available by going to WWW.vanityhq.com

Cool.. For some reason I though it changed. I'd like to get something that rolls off the tongue easy.. The MSZ doesn't for me. heh.

That's interesting, how do you know what level of licence they have when you talk to them then?

You can't tell from the call sign, unfortunately. You can't even be sure of the station's location since there's no longer a requirement for the numeral in the call to correspond with a geographic area. Best you can do is ask, or listen for a few minutes. If you hear a question about how to build a dipole coming from a 1X2 station, that might be a clue...

No wonder some hams from the US get so confused with the UK call sign system!

M0MJH is correct on sequencing call signs, (I just looked at the FCC site again). In fact thats been on my mind lately, I plan on testing for extra soon.

My vanity call got approved the other day. I like it a a lot more the KF5MSZ.

Just wanted something I liked and will be using till, well, when I drop dead..

I don't like the vanity system, I'll take whatever I'm given.
