do you have the attenuator switched in?
Hello, all-- I will be staying in a motel room for the next 2 months
on a business trip. I brought along a new (to me) TS-2000 which
I got from a friend. Anxious to do some listening on the bands, I
strung up about 40-feet of wire around the room ceiling and down
off my 2nd-floor balcony. I realize that this is a terrible antenna
but (not to mention no ground!) but I just wanted to listen on the
bands (80, 40, 20 meters). I plugged the antenna wire into ANT-1
and selected FUNC-ANT-1. Main squelch CCW, Main audio ON,
VFO-1, Main RF Gain full CW. I do hear a few (a VERY few) signals
here and there, but they are all just BARELY out of the noise.
When I plug the same antenna wire into an el-cheapo Radio Shack
SW receiver, the bands are FULL of very strong signals.
I carefully followed the owner's manual page on setting up for
"Your First HF QSO" but the rig acts as if the antenna is not
being internally connected to the receiver.
What do I have set wrong on this rig?
Thanks for any hints and suggestions!

do you have the attenuator switched in?
Here are a few things to check.
Is the preamp on? There should be a display of "PRE" if not press the 'PRE' button on the top left just under the on/off button.
Have you selected the correct antenna socket? There are two SO239 sockets on the back of the radio, marked ANT1 and ANT2, and you select them by pressing the 'FUNC' and the 'AT' button (marked ANT1/2 in orange above the button which is just to the left of the main display or above and to the right of the PHONES socket). The antenna socket in use is then shown as "ANT 1" or "ANT 2" under the S-Meter/ALC meter to the left of the display.
If none of the above helps, check that the RX only socket is not selected by going to Menu 18 and making sure that the dedicated RX only antenna isn't selected by making sure that menu 18 shows 'OFF'.
Hpe this helps.
