Thread: West Wales 2m coverage

    Default West Wales 2m coverage

West Wales (that part formerly known as Dyfed) is badly served by 2 metre coverage, both GB3WW and GB3PW hardly touch the area. 70cm is a little better.

Surprisingly there is a perfect site for a Amateur radio repeater at Haverfordwest where a redundant mast is located next to the former BBC Haverfordwest Transmitter (see photo).

although a better site would probably be next to the Preselli transmitter although there would be planning restrictions.

Too many pointy things in Wales, but yes, additional repeater coverage is a good thing.

Having something that would cover a tad further north towards Aberystwyth would help too but of course then you'd have the problem of getting someone to maintain and be responsible for them. So is there a repeater planned for the above site?

Nothing planned as far as I know, the main costs are set up ,rent (can't be pretty hefty if a mast belongs to one of the big Communications companies), and electricity, some repeaters are self sufficient being powered by wind and solar power which keeps costs down, most repeaters are run by groups, in all fairness if you use repeaters you should join your local group.

Hmmmm, I wonder how much P&P would be on that beastie?

Of course the other factor that many forget is that repeaters need users and those prepared to fund the repeater and the decision to move the GB3WW repeater from Carmarthen to Port Talbot was taken on the grounds that there were very few Ham operators in West Wales.
This decision was taken before the Ofcom relaxation on the licences and the intrduction of the Foundation licence etc
Lets hope as the numbers of Ham operators increase in WW then it can afford and justify a local repeated.
