Thread: Yet another featureless logging program

Default Yet another featureless logging program

okay, so I am not the world's most talented coder or the most imaginative (and know nothing about specialist ham functions for software yet). Yet, I wanted to write my own logger, even if there are miles better out there.

Problem is that I have one tester and he is missing in action so I am stuck for ideas and bug hunters.

Could any kind souls put me out of my misery when they have time and download and test my rubbish please? Pretty please With sugar on top???

It's totally portable and I add things as I think about them but I really need suggestions. (And I have to update the help file completely, but it is mostly done)

I just downloaded it, doesn't seem too bad normally I use the Ham Radio Deluxe suite for logging..

The whole enter callsign/location: would be nice if you just clicked on the box to enter the text not have to remove the extra field text.

    Logging
    - RST my personal ref and its common across most software is that this is just one field not two.

    Features Needed:
    - ADIF/Cabrillo Import/Export standard formats used in the amateur radio world for moving log data around.

Overall seems like a nice little app for someone wanting no nonsense logging.

Thanks for trying it out, it's great to receive feedback like this. I don't understand everything you said (being a new amateur and all that implies) so will do a pm to you for clarification if that's okay?

    Thanks.

I assume the last program was for a MAC. There is a collection of very old HAM Free programs including a LOG now running under Windows at below mostly by others than me. Use the BBCmenu

sigord, if that remark was for me, my program runs under windows. I forgot to mention that before

Fangles I have nothing on my system that associates with a .7z file, so I assumed it might be for a MAC or Linux. Is it a variation of a ZIP file?

7z is an extension managed by most compression programs such as WinZip, WinRar, BitZipper, PowerArchiver, ALZip, PeaZip, Xarchiver, Zipeg, 7Zip and many others. I use it because it seems to be more efficient than some of the others that I have found.

It supports multiple compression methods internally.

I've been fiddling again. Decided that I wanted a 'contact type' and a 'category' field and icons for both. The fields are in the list as well but you 'should' be able to tell from the icons what those fields are for a record.

Also added ADIF as suggested by 2e0sql but I need to talk to someone about the output as there is no relation between ADIF and 5 of the fields in the program and they have to be output as custom.

If anyone wants to test this beta, I let me know and I will upload it to my site (hopeful look)

Lots of tiny changes since I last put this post in. Forgot to update it!!

Minor update today as an Aussie ham asked me to add in the ability to duplicate a highlighted record for when you are operating fast.

Press ALT + D on a highlighted record and it is copied and opened in ADD mode for you to change just what varies between that and the current QSO.

Like it! It's great! Hope you don't mind me stealing a couple of things for my own logger.

The more the merrier!! I learn from everyone else's so fair is fair. I still have to learn how to handle proper UTC time in my software as it doesn't bother yet and the natives are complaining. So much to do, so little brain!

Mind you, I have run out of real ideas to do at this point (simple ones!!) but this rubbish of mine at least does what I need it to.

I'm actaully working on UTC myself. I'm planning on using a python script (Which will be converted to an EXE) actually place the current UTC time in memory. My program will then dig it out. I'm also planning on allowing python to network different loggers, so my users can use more than one computer and make an ad-hoc network in which all the logs will remain unified.

The compiler that I use can do anything so long as I know what to do. But I got so many ideas (and code) from sources on how to implement it (which I tried) and those same people said it didn't work!! Arrrrrrghgh.

I'd rather get some new ideas about what else to add to my junk at this point than deal with that at the moment.

Just remember: Firstly design it how you want it and then secondly design how others want it. If you put everyone else's designs into your logger, then you'll lose sight of where you're going with it.

Keep in mind what you want to do with it, if someone else tells you something, don't do it simply because they tell you it's something they want or something the program needs. Do it because it's something you find useful in the program.
