FT-817 with the wide band mod.
Hi All --
Taking my test on friday to become a tech and I am looking at mobile radios. I was looking at the YAESU VX-8DR but it doesnt seem to have the bands for Family Radio or CB. My family uses the Family Radio system a lot and it would be really great if I could use my portable ham for this also. Anyone know of a portable ham radio that can do Family Radio? I would also like it to have the 6m band.
Thanks!
Kyle

That is a strange radio! It is like a mix of a car radio and hand held... what do you call these kinds of radios? It fits in my budget and seems like it has more potential than a hand held.... Could this be easily used in the car and home? I thought I read somewhere that you can hook an amp to it to get more wattage.... Thanks for the help!
Its a "transportable", so its really a field radio but is popular as a mobile rig.
Worth bearing in mind that in most countries, you cannot use an amateur radio transciever for transmitting on other bands/services, no matter if you have a licence for these bands or not... radios need to be type approved for use for specific services. In the U.S, E.U. and many other countries, it would be unlawful if you used an amateur radio transciever on cb bands, and almost certainly low power public use type frequencies allocations such as PMR/Family Radio.
It may sound odd, but that's how it works I'm afraid.

Speaking of which, I see that MLS are selling lots of rigs with "Full TX + £15.00" , I am assuming that means they will be widebanded and as such illegal for use in the UK?
I think the official stance would be that they are wide banded to enable use of the 5mhz amateur band (NOV required for U.K. amateurs) and/or for vague export use.
The 40m band has been expanded over the last couple of years, so that would've been some legit justification for wide band tx to cover extra 100khz that old stock may not have been able to cover. The 40m band will eventually go up to 7.300mhz.

There's no problem using a wide band tx on ham freq, remember lots of people use pmr rigs and homebrew!
Exactly, you can use modified equipment to be used on amateur bands, it works that way around. Type approval doesn't come into amateur radio as such, as the pastime is all about experimentation and that you are deemed capable of keeping within conditions of use in the amateur bands.

Ah, that doesnt make sense to me, but there must be a reason for it. I was wondering why I was having such a hard time finding a radio that did more of these 'common' bands (cb, family.) I only say common because common people can use them without much effort. Now I know why most ham's I see in pictures have lots of radios! Maybe that will be me someday =) Anyways, I think I will focus my efforts on picking my first real ham radio and leave the others to another day. Anyone know if a ham store in the Chicago area?
AES in Milwaukee, just up the road...≋<8-)x
