Thread: Pc headset to radio headset

Default Pc headset to radio headset

My local has a load of computer headsets with microphone and earphones in one headset. It has one 3.5mm plug for the headphones and another for the microphone. Does anyone know if this would work for amateur radio, such as a handheld. I could also use it with a foot peddle or something on my base rig perhaps?

Yes it will work, but you need to add a Press To Talk switch somewhere.

Usually a small plastic box with three 3.5mm sockets on it and a lead going to the microphone/speaker sockets on the radio.

The first socket is for headphones, straight 3 wire connection here,

Second is the mic signal, depending on the type of mic insert you have, if it is a dynamic type (300Ohms) just two wires, if it is an electret (1200+Ohms), then you need to feed it a couple of Volts (from the mic socket usually), plus two wires.

Third socket is the PTT, again just two wires to a footswitch, mercury tiltswitch etc...
