I'm wondering if it's legal to use a HAM radio in an airplane. I'm a pilot, mechanic and soon to be builder of an airplane. Is it legal? What are the laws and rules regarding this? Anyone know? Thanks for the help!

Can't be done in the UK, not sure where your from but contact your goverment's licensing dept for advice. However, it should be in your license booklet??
I think, from your other posts, that you're located in the U.S. ...In which case you are able to operate /AM, but you'll need to dig deeper for official conditions of use, rather than just go ahead after some guy the other side of the atlantic says it's ok
There is a fair bit of info on the web about /AM operation, but I can't remember where... maybe eham
As James says, /AM is prohibited for UK licence holders now.
edit: here's one item i found

not as far as large commercial aircraft, there's a very active PA flying freight around EU, and SAS have their own amateur radio club who operate /AM on passenger flights.... but only in straight level flightHowever, I can't say I've heard a light aircraft over EU on the bands for a long time.
