    Cool Mountain use of G5RV

Jeez this image verification is a pain.

I spent the weekend assembling a 1/2 size G5RV. I live on the side of a mountain and so it's not a typical installation. One end is atop a wooden sailboat mast 22 feet high. The other is atop a grape trellis 8 feet high. The 14 foot, 300 ohm feed centre point is about 16' off the ground. The coax RG 8U will run about 36 feet.

With a laser sight we know the flat top will be level. About 2 city blocks away the ground rises to 3800 feet on the Pacific coast side and about 2 miles away east it goes to 1700 meters. This is parallel to the antenna. The antenna is aligned north/south.

I could raise the low end by about 5 feet if required.

Would anyone care to speculate on the performance I might have under these conditions.

    Thnx DAve

Pretty good I should think! you may have trouble going "through" the mountain (ground) behind the antenna, depending what it contains.
A friend of mine is in a valley, surounded by flint mountains. H.F. isn't that bad, but V/UHF is really hard work.

Having a level H.F. antenna isn't really important, as the radiation bends all over the place, due to propagation.

I seem to remember someone saying G5RV's work best if the feeder is straight down, which yours is.

Probably wouldn't hurt to raise it as high as you can

With a low antenna for the HF bands you are going to get high angle radiation in any case. Ideal really for hams living in valleys!
