Thread: Call sign Register

    Default Call sign Register

The call signs stored by http://www.qrz.com/ on their Database are obviously posted purely voluntary, so thousands must be missing. Is there another site one can rely on to store ALL UK call signs?

    Thanks Gordon

You can purchase the RSGB callbook, BUT!, many licensees withhold their details so there is no 100% accurate database, even more so now you don't renew every year. Also callsigns are not issued in order so its much easier for someone to pirate a callsign.

Not strictly true, they have database helpers uploading from regional call books... If you see an entry without an e-mail address, you can be pretty sure that it wasn't added by the callsign holder. A family friend (late G3) hasn't been active since the 70's and doesn't use the interent... but he's up there with his full postal address. Must admit, I'd rather that postal addresses were only viewable to registered QRZ members, as e-mail addresses are.

I used to have my full address in the RSGB callbook, Then..... a couple of guys came around when I was out at work. They said they were from the Electricity Board and wanted to check all the appliances in the house starting with THE RADIO TRANSMITTER! My wife smelled a rat and called their bluff asking for identification. The callers fled.
Ever since then I have omitted my address from ANYTHING to do with ham radio.

Thanks guys for all you input. Being a newbie here only interested in 2 M and 70 CM, and only a M3 never likely to risk all the hassle a massive antennas etc for HF, I must hunt around for the option to be notified of kind replies to postings here.

Pity there is not one reliable database of all call signs. I find it difficult to always log the correct one for the few contacts I manage here in Hastings, so I like to verify I have the correct details before bragging in our local club news letter or friends.

I totally agree regarding the dangers of disclosing the likes of home address, also phone numbers and email addresses etc in open forums and such as the RSGB, where for years my details have been shown as the club contact now Secretary for the Hastings Electronics and Radio Club. This is why I constantly advise all NEVER to disclose your exact DOB to the likes of Facebook as it is often used such as by hospitals for your ID.

This is also why I pointed out in my recent Editorial, after we uploaded all the names and callsigns of members to http://www.radioclubs.net/herc/ I was amazed the RSGB were allowing gullible clubs to also include home address, Phone number, email address even biography!
