I know back in 2005, I enquired about a reciprocal licence for another Ham (a GI4) who was going to California for a few weeks, and Gordo West replied and said that if you want a US licece you have to do the US Exams. Maybe things have changed since then.

Recently Licensed myself as well. US Technician and General on same day.

Callsign issued was KD8QDY.

Applied immediately for my grandfathers old call and received weeks later

I am now N8GRQ

I am currently studying for my US Amateur Extra and should get that here by July 16th or sooner if I start grasping the material better. My Scientific Calculator is getting a workout.
