Default Icom 2200h or 208h... i cant choose...

I am looking to get a base/mobile 2m rig... i havent really decided if i am going to use it mobile or base, leaning more twards base until i get my general. at that time ill get an all mode and move the mobile rig to mobile use...

anyhow i like the 208 because of its size and remote mount face, but the 2200 is dstar ready and also about $150 less and it looks equally as ascetically pleasing. (although the dstar board cost more than the radio)

maybe users of these to radios could chime in... or maybe someone has used both...

    thanks guys

    I know,,old post,and i don't see much posting here in the Icom forum..Hmmmmmmmm?

I myself am i big Icom fan. Anyways i do have the 208,and it sure performs very well.I always liked Icom for having an attenuator built into the squelch control...A big plus for me..I can't say much about the 2200,but i think i would go with which one would work if you are interested in D-star.

Spend the extra for it,and you are ready to go..In my area they will probably never get the D-star anyways.

    Default Icom 208?

I've owned and used three 208s for more than five years and they are an excellent radio. I wouldn't get involved with D-Star unless there was an established repeater and a decent amount of D-Star activity in my home area. For my money P25 is a much more viable and useful digital protocol but that's just a personal opinion.

    Default Ic-2200h

The IC-2200H is a very good 2m 'analogue' mobile. The D-Star board (UT-118) is a very expensive add on and only provides the most basic D-star functionality.

I use my IC-2200H to chat on my local 2m D-Star repeater (GB7OK in Orpington, Kent), and it does work admirably, even though you don't get any call signs or messages being displayed on the screen.

If you want a 2m only mobile, then the IC-2200H is a very good choice. If you want to explore D-Star, buy one of the newer dual band models.

I would choose IC-2200H also, if you like remote head capability and good price, I would consider Yaesu FT-7900R or now obsolete FT-7800, FT-7900R, FT-7800 has microphone plug in remote head stead of main units, so I like it. FT-7900R sell in US around US $250
