Default TS-50 up/down buttons not working

I have seen this problem mentioned several times (but no explanation of the cause). So, is this a common problem? Parts available?

Looking at the yahoo TS50 owners group. These sites are always a good source of knowledge & fixes. I found no infomation about cause or fix other than the following from 2007.

Yep, I saw that but I have no idea how he got it to write since that requires the use of the button that does not work. After reading it I tried again and even watched the data pulses from the buttons go all the the to the processor. Microprocessors rarely go bad. In most cases, when a processor does the wrong thing it is because it has wrong data coming from somewhere else. I was hoping to save a couple of hours tracing down each pin of the digital processing circuits until I find a fault. I will post what I find.
