Check the radio/battery contacts, it's likely they're bent, corroded or dirty.
I had a similar problem with my digital camera, only Sony owned up and recalled them all for a free fix.
I recently purchased a very slightly used VX-6R. When the unit arrived, the battery had a full charge, so I used the rig for several hours without any problem. When I plugged in the provided NC-72B adaptor, though, I got a "NO BAT" error message on the display screen (the unit powered up on external DC, though, so it was clear that the charger was working). The tech support folks at Yaesu insisted this meant that the battery was defective, so I ordered a new one. I have the same issue again - the battery powered the unit until it's charge was depleted. When I connect the charge adaptor, I get power to the unit (it shows that it is running on external DC), but the charge light glows orange and I get a NO BAT message (and the battery does not charge).
Has anybody encountered this error before? Is there something that can be reset on the unit? Would this be solved by using a charging cradle (versus charging through the unit)? Or, will I need to send the HT back to Yaesu for repair?
Thanks!

The contacts look perfect, and the radio runs fine on battery power if the battery has been charged elsewhere. I suspect it's a problem within the HT that is preventing it from charging through the radio.
Could be that the diode from the power socket has been "blown".
A surface mount diode is pretty small (to replace), a 5 minute job, but might be worth getting it professionally done if you don't like soldering with a magnifying glass
See if you can find the diode, it may not show signs of burning, but may be cracked. Is there anything rattling around inside?
Same problem happened to me. Brand new unit and battery. Anyone ever find a resolution to this problem?
I have seen this on my own VX-6 a few times. The unit charges the batteries just fine and seems to work just as it did on day one. I've checked the contacts and cleaned them etc. Again, all works and the unit charges the batteries just fine. I've just ignored it.
