a year ago doing a XLR cable at uni and I burnt myself in the process! that being said need to do my intermediate kit at some point!
Been a bit quiet here of late, so time for a few fun topics.
The last thing I used my rarely used soldering iron on was the cable connectors to my Hustler 6-BTV. It consisted of 2 different sized washers with extra bits for soldering the coax to it.
Can I ask for one reply each, so this post won't get bogged down with lots of replies. You can start new topics to expand discussions, thanks.
Now your turn.

I think a rather boring pl259 jobby was my last with an iron, I had about 4m of excess rg8x on my 2/70 antenna, and finally got around to chopping it off. I just know that I'll have a shack reorganisation and regret it
... before that I hard wired a length of dc cable into my Welz pwr/swr meter, as I can't find any plugs to fit the 12v input on the thing. I can live without the PEP feature but it was just annoying me and I was a bit bored at the time.

My rear bike light, I converted an old "Ever Ready" square type, to LED's.
Being a cheapskate, I just soldered the batteries onto the wires & no matter how much packing foam I use inside around the battery, the wire keeps coming off
The refelector is brilliant and the lens is big, looks good with ex "sun lamp" LED's dancing around inside, the most visible one I've bodged yet!
My scanner just died last week. Went to turn it on and nothing. Checked the wall-wart and it was good. So, I opened the scanner up (HP 3970) to see if there was anything obvious. Underneath an electrolytic capacitor which was lying on its side was...a fuse! Checked, and it was open! "Ah," sez I, "not all that obvious but a possible fix."
It's a solder-in fuse, 1.25A@250V, and about 1/2 inch long. Not very common, but I had some fairly compact 1.5A fuses, to which I soldered some leads after wire brushing the end caps to remove the nickel plating. Connected it back up and reassembled the scanner. Voila! Works just like it's supposed to!

Soldering on some big 75Amp Powerpole connectors for the mobile setup. I had an MFJ Battery Booster to try out!![]()
used my soldering iron to construct a home made, home designed portable 20m telescopic 6ft antenna with counterpoise.works ok as long as there's not a bad pile up(and the propagations reasonably good)
every day at work for surface mount devices and discreet componants aswell as various leads, pluds and connectors all with the one iron as i am too lazy to go to the surface mount iron

last time I used my iron was this time last year putting some PL259s onto a bit of coax for a patch lead :P

Beware the lightning that lurketh in an undischarged capacitor lest it cause thee to be bounced upon thy buttocks in a most ungentlemanly manner!
anytime I add anything to my car (CB, stereo..) and for little experiment circuits at home. nothing drastic, just more reliable then electric tape and not as bulky as twist caps.
Last night building a morse keyer for my Intermediate practical assesment project![]()
Last time was about 2 months ago converting a 600W PC PSU to run my shack.
Replaced the "missing" filter components and coupling the leads together.
The next thing will be my intermediate project which will be a Switch mode PSU as soon as i've finished drawing the diagram for it

Oh lets see.....last time I think was soldering the connections of a 20mtr dipole I made out of speaker wire to hang from my window here.
Got myself a new solderstation that I need to give a test run on but not got anything I can use it for as yet.
I was testing some mild steel mechanics wire to see if it would solder for antenna use. Before that it was the power leads on an ICOM IC-28H, and befor that the power cord on my ASTRON RS-35A.
I built a wind charger from an old servo and six bridge rectifiers - woohoo six phase rectification!

I've been using mine, now almost every day for the past few weeks - I have been stripping down old stuff, such as an old PC, digibox and stereo amplifier, for the components. After over a twenty year lull, it's time to get active again.
RG-8 259 connectors so I could put my HF and VHF/UHF antennas up.
I de-soldered a joint for someone on Thursday. But it was "A" soldering iron, not "MY" soldering iron.
