vBulletin has to win hands down! 8)
For all you forum nerds out there here is the important question.
Should we continue with phpBB or save from our meagre Google Ads revenue and get vBulletin???
vBulletin has to win hands down! 8)

Beware the lightning that lurketh in an undischarged capacitor lest it cause thee to be bounced upon thy buttocks in a most ungentlemanly manner!
Something that allows you to subscribe to the rss feeds of favorite topics.
For example: the commuting topic at bikeforums.net
http://www.bikeforums.net/external.php? ... orumids=20
Then I could keep tabs on my favorite topics through bloglines... and everyone else through their favorite rss feed reader.
VBulletin without a doubt, much more configerable, and secure. I used phpbb for years, and got hacked loads of times despite keeping up-to-date with releases. Since using vb (about 5 years) no problems.
You are right phpbb is prone to getting hacked lots, perhaps due to the fact its source code is feely available so its easy to find the bugs.Touch wood HRF hasn't had any problems like that.

OK, I am resurrecting an old post, but looking at the new version of vBulletin it has so many features we could use here on our forum.
So I am starting a ChipIn box to see if raising the Funds is possible.
I will also donate the first $25 to it. Anyone want to match me?
In the words of the great geriatric, "I Don't Believe It" (I am referring to Victor Meldrew).
We have had a kind donation of the additional funds to purchase vBulletin, and we will be working to upgrade the forum to this in the next week or so.
More information soon.
Just a note to this thread to say the new system is live.. if you haven't already noticed.

The odd thing is, bearing in mind that I run big boards and have always promoted vB... our techs are wanting us to shift from vB, saying that there are better alternatives now, that a lot of the best vB devs have left recently, and the updates are becoming few and far between.
However, that's their take and we've yet to really go into it in depth... me, I know where I am with vB![]()

Interesting that there wanting to shift Andy.. can you say what to? I'm more then happy now we're running vB hell of a lot better then phpbb!![]()

Like I say, we haven't really gone into it in any depth, it will need one of our occasional meetings to get precise info, but if they are serious about a move, we will expect to see the alternatives in action.
Our techs were very much involved at the very start of vB ... so it could be a case of allegiances over the years. How any transition would go about seems very daunting to me, but maybe it will be fairly seemless with a new system that wants vB trade. We couldn't do it as has happened here with the password issue, the repercusions would be unthinkable from a business perspective.
I'm certainly happy you have moved to vB![]()

We could argue, the Passwords were so secure we couldn't move em. LOL
We tried quite a few times, but always meant resetting the password.
On a plus note, we have been online most of the weekend to help the half dozen or so who had problems, and all are now back on the forum (with one exception, but for a different reason).
Oh I agree, even for some of the clients I deal with it just couldn't happen, I tried for a good few hours to get phpbb3 passwords across but the way they'd been encrypted in the database made it impossible.. thankfully though most hams are most forgiving and happily reset their passwordWe couldn't do it as has happened here with the password issue, the repercusions would be unthinkable from a business perspective.
Pleased to hear it! and I hope all the other members feel the same way.I'm certainly happy you have moved to vB![]()

This forum doesn't look at good in IE6. It works, but doesn't look at swish as in Firefox or Chrome.
But I can't upgrade it at work, so will be stuck with using IE6 for now.
I would recommend where you can use it to use FireFox, Google Chrome or the latest version of Internet Explorer.
