When I scan on this radio, I'd like to just stick to the ham bands, but can't figure out to do it. For example, if I scan the 440 band, it keeps scanning well beyond the amateur band before it hits some kind of limit and goes back to the beginning of the 440 band. Is there any way to narrow these bands?

Page 61 of the manual: PROGRAMMABLE (BAND LIMIT) MEMORY SCAN (PMS)

Hope this helps.

Awesome - exactly what I needed. Thank you! I can't understand: if it's an amateur radio, not not carve up the frequencies to isolate the amateur frequencies in the first place? Why mix frequencies I can transmit on with frequencies I can't in the same group of frequencies? Again - thanks - I'm lovin' this radio.

Most stock amateur gear can receive almost from DC to daylight, but not transmit except in the ham bands. Are you the original owner of the Yaesu? If not, and if the radio allows you to transmit outside the ham bands, there's a good chance a former owner has ... messed around with it.
At any rate, a licensed amateur operator is responsible for knowing where he's transmitting. There's nothing wrong with having a "modified" radio as long as you don't transmit beyond the limits of your license.

Help! As you can see above, I had trouble figuring out the PMS feature. 2EOJTP referred me to the correct part of the manual, and I'm embarrassed to say that I can't seem to figure it out. I can figure out how the store frequencies as the low and high limits, AND I can figure out how to even enter the PMS mode! For example, the manual says that if I press the V/M key and hold it, I'll get PMS in the upper left corner or the display. When I do that, I get MT instead. Is there anyone who can take me through using the PMS step by step? Thank you for the help!

Whoops - I just realized that that instead of saying that I CAN store frequencies and enter the PMS mode, I meant to say I CAN'T. Definitely makes more sense that way.

You cannot activate PMS mode because there is an error in the manual. Please see my post about this radio, on my website:

Rather than start a new thread for this short question, I figured I'd ask it here since the original thread question/purpose has been answered (hope this is okay).
I just bought a VX-7r and have never owned a Yaesu before now. On the display, there is an indicator that is an "S" with a black background around the letter, which flashes periodically. I've been through the entire manual twice now and cannot determine what this means. Does anybody know? Thanks!

Most likely SAVE function. Try the "battery save" section.
It blinks when it is "active", and steady when it is "enabled". For example, if it blinks it is actively saving power by shutting down the speaker, etc.

I think it means that the radio is in battery save mode when it is flashing.
