Internet Over Radio?

Is it possible for a person to get a encoder and decoder and be able to send internet over a frequency of the Ham Band? :confused:

Many years ago I and a few others experimented with connecting 4 wire modems (that shows how long ago it was!) over a VHF link. It worked better than I expected, with a data rate of 4,800 bps, which was about what could be achieved over a phone line at that time.
