10M or SSB for Marine use

I sail down the coast and to Bermuda and I would would like to know if SSB is a better choice than a 10m radio?

SSB tends to go further than FM, it uses slightly less power too.
You do realise you need an amateur license to transmit above 28MHz (10m).
