I was going through my new TS-940s and testing proper operation on receive and transmit. CW, SSB and FM seem to transmit ok, but on AM, the modulation is severely backing up. I have tried to set the carrier from a few watts to 50 and no matter where I set it, the modulation backs up.
Example: If I set carrier at 30 watts, when I talk into mic, power drops to about 10 or lower and sounds very distorted on another radio. I am testing this on a Cantenna dummy load, which is giving me a 1:1 match.
I have tried 2 different watt meters and it also shows severe backwards modulation on the radios own meter. I decided to put it on a scope and when I modulate, it looks like the carrier is just collapsing on itself.
Is this just an adjustment in the radio that I need to make, or a more serious problem?
I have scopes, a spectrum analyzer, lab quality signal generator and numerous other pieces of test equipment, so I am very comfortable making any necessary adjustments. If anyone knows what I need to do to fix the problem, I would be very grateful.

I just bought the radio and do not want to give seller any negative feedback or hassles if it is just something simple.

if any items which arent as described and the seller has made no indication that there are problems with it, you are justified in giving negative feedback.

I'm not acquainted with the TS-940 so I cannot help you :(

First thing you should do is contact the seller ASAP! Don't start adjusting it or take the lid off. Ask to return the radio to him and get him to sort it, if he can;t or won't, push for refund.
