Want to build a transceiver.

I am currently gearing up to build myself a homebrew transceiver. I want to install a computer into the box so it will be self contained. I would like to use parts and pieces from anything I can get my hands on. If anyone has ideas of what kind of items i could use to make my project. Any help would be greatfull

Interesting idea mayday, What bits have you got so far? maybe try and get hold of a few old hifi components and use bits from them? certainly help to provide the controls.

I'm planning on building a rig as well. There are two main restraints:
1. Buy as little as possible! I have various old electronics stuff lying around.
2. No computers. Well, no internet... I hope to be able use the books that I have. Some of them are well old, like the ARRL Handbook for 1968! No, I haven't had it that long, it was my dad's first. I hope also to write up the project & stick it up on a website.

I'm going for something simple, first, such as a 2 M FM repeater channel only rig. Then work up to more complex thingies. I was thinking about 2 M AM, or 4 or 6 Metres, but here in Finland, VHF AM activity is next to non-existent, and I'm not 100% sure if I can use the 4 or 6 M bands. The UK licensing authority grand-fathered my Class B license to a Class A, but I'm not sure if the change can be reciprocated to my Finnish license - though, I guess I could work as OH/G8UBU? ;)

I would suggest you start by building a receiver, possibly a direct conversion RX. Forget the computer idea unless you want to build a software defined radio.
Also, computers generate a lot of RF at all sorts of frequencies.
Building an SSB transmitter is quite complicated. Removing the unwanted sideband and carrier requires a lot of filtering. You couls more easily build a CW transmitter or AM transmitter with Heising modulation for efficiency.
