does anyone know if this setup works?

It might "work" IF the other guy is sending machine-perfect code. No computerized code reader can do the job as well as that computer between your ears.

I've not personally used the MFJ kit but you'd probably be better of using the soundcard in the computer to read the morse code there's CWGet and also a few other good packages.
